BHS started in 1907 as an Agricultural High School and today has a student population of approximately 1450 students’. The structure of our school is set into three main student areas; year 7 and 8 teams, year 9 ARCH team and later years pathway teams. In 2009 our school implemented a Learning Adviser model where all students’ have a Learning Advisor (LA) to meet with once a week. The Learning Adviser structure focuses on different aspects of each students’ growth and learning needs and the aims of each year level are as follows.
Year 7 and 8 – the focus is on building positive relationships with all people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Students’ firstly get to know and understand the individual and how to effectively work in teams and groups.
Year 9’s look at the Learner; what sort of learner are they, how they learn, how to best work with a range of learning styles within groups and/or their class.
Year 10-12 (later years) focuses on Emotional Intelligence (EI) and how to build upon their EI. Goal setting, study and organisational habits for effective learning and study, and future pathways.
The setting of our school and focus has evolved over the past five years, due to changes in the leadership structure, school principals, leading teachers and staffing and student organisation. BHS is 102 years old and a very traditional school set in a well established area of Ballarat. Potential Parents’, Students’ and Teachers’ want to be part of the Ballarat High School Community as it is seen to be the best Government Secondary School in Ballarat. BHS is regularly involved in activities not only with other Government Schools but also local independent schools and is successful when competing against these schools in a diverse range of arenas. The leaders within our school have designed a Learning Framework, with the Learner in Centre, surrounded by six components that initiate conversation around learning, building positive relationships, higher order thinking skills and understanding all students’ can learn. Learning styles and emotional intelligence are areas that have been professionally developed with our leaders, staff and students and are the central focus to all areas of our school.
